Dennis the Menace

He's a big guy and we are feeling it even here in Tally -- winds up to 50 mph, lots of rain. The power went out with a BANG about an hour ago. I feel so sorry for the people in Pensacola, many of whom haven't recovered from Ivan the Terrible last year. They are getting slammed even as I write this; Dennis is making landfall now.

It'll go on battery for a couple of hours; and if the phone line stays live, there you are. My computer will probably run out of juice any minute now and then I'll be like you during a power outtage you once described to me: guess I'll go cook -- no; well, I'll play some music --- maybe not. Okay, I'll vacuum -- no.

One positive note: I've got scads of reading material and a few good hours of overcast daylight.

That's right -- landfall's when the center of the storm - the eye and the strongest winds just outside of it - hit land. Before that (and afterward) one experiences "feeder bands" - the galaxy-like spirals of storm activity that come out of the center. If it's a big enough storm the feeder bands can extend over a very substantial area.

That's what's happening here -- very quiet but overcast and then another band passes over with wind and rain. I thought I'd venture out because things were so quiet but it really stepped up a few minutes ago so I think I'll stay put.
